HERETICAL DEPENDENCY

Watch Michael and Flemming in a chitchat about the lyrics and the making of the video:

BACKGROUND

Like all other tracks on our debutalbum Whispers of Leviathan, Heretical Dependency focus on deceitful leaders of society.

Few topics have received more attention in our home country, Denmark, than Climate Change. Politicians from most parties boast of their achievements ... leaving the voters with the impression that we are all entitled to polish our halos. Abroad we are also recognized as environmental frontrunnersUnfortunately we have very little to be proud about.

Yes, the modern type of wind turbines was developed in Denmark. And yes, Danish Industry have contributed with other green success stories. But that's about it.

What the fairytales seldom include is the fact that Denmark has been one of the largest oil-producers in Europe for several decades (and remains the base for extensive production of both oil and natural gas).

We are well aware that change doesn't happen overnight. But Climate Change was already acknowledged as a global threat in the early 1980's, so what does four decades of fossil fuel production say about Denmarks role as a global frontrunner? And how is the Danish population supposed to react to our continuous ranking as one of the least ressource- and ecofriendly populations on the planet

Sounds like something is still rotten in the state of Denmark. Doesn't it?

OUR PERSONAL MOTIVATION

We don't raise these questions because of a lack of patriotism - we raise them because we are tired of being lied to!

Perhaps we shouldn't give a damn, but pollution always comes with a price. Sometimes it can be measured in death tolls and increasing numbers of sick people. Other times the cost is "only" monetary. No matter what, someone ends up paying - and if the polluters don't, then the cost is paid by the victims.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU?

One thing most people have in common is that we pay tax. It may sound boring, but since the previous generations have seldom payed to clean up their mess, the bills are now left to the tax payers of today and tomorrow.

For instance, the Danish Government have recently decided that the tax payers shall cover the clean up costs at the pesticide factory Cheminova. This pollution is widely regarded as the worst in the history of Denmark, so we find it peculiar that the bill has been passed on to 5,9 million people who didn't contribute to the pollution. Wouldn't it be more fair if the tax payers share of bill (so far 80 million euros and still counting) was paid by the owners?

Or even better ... what if the Danish authorities had stopped the pollution in due time? After all, the owner of the factory was the second largest university in the country, so the government had a lot of leverage - which was never used.

INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT

If all this was just a question about money, it might not have been worth singing about. But to make matters worse, the abovementioned pesticide factory Cheminova (now: FMC) keeps producing an insect poison called Chlorpyrifos. This product has been completely banned in the EU and the US for health reasons, but the Danish authorities has not found it necessary to prohibit the continued production and sale to countries like Pakistan and Lebanon.

Perhaps this gives you an idea about why Michael is screaming his lungs off?

THE BIG QUESTION

The global costs related to Climate Change is currently estimated to 143 billion US dollars pr year. The clean up
costs related to pollution from pesticides, chemicals and plastics are also gigantic. But the real tragedy is that the costs would be minimal if the leaders of the world listened to their advisors.

An extensive analysis was presented by the International Monetary Fund in 2021. The analysis points out that Globally, fossil fuel subsidies are above 5.000 billion Euros each year. In other words tax payers all over the world are forced to waste a mindblowing lot of money on keeping the fossil fuel industry alive.

Do you think it's fair to waste all this money at a time when much cheaper and healthier alternatives are available? We would love to hear YOUR opinion about pollution. Is it a problem in your home area - or are you satisfied with business as usual? We can all learn from each other, so feel free to share your thoughts in a message to us at:

AND BEFORE YOU ASK:
THIS VIDEO IS NOT ABOUT POLITICAL IDEOLOGIES. IN DENMARK, THE CURRENT GOVERNMENT IS A COALITION OF LEFT WING AND RIGHT WING PARTIES. THAT MAKES SOCIALISTS AND CAPITALISTS EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE ... UNTIL THEY CLEAN UP THE MESS.
